Hoskins Church & Garden
History
Building churches is not a common Australian pastime, building a church as a memorial to a loved son, is even more uncommon. Yet the death of Guildford, killed accidently at 28 years of age, is what lies behind the construction of Hoskins Memorial Church, Lithgow.
Church
Initially envisioned by Charles Hoskins in 1916 as a way of expressing his faith in the goodness of God, faith strengthened through suffering, the building and grounds have been developed and maintained by the Hoskins family since 1928. Additional information is contained in a booklet about the church available at the Parish office.
Gardens
The landscaping of the grounds is attributed to Mr P Sorenson of Leura. A memorial rock has been placed in the grounds in memory of his two sons who were killed in World War II.
The grounds feature exotic trees including golden ash, weeping elm, crab apples and japanese cherries. English oak trees, underplanted with rhododendrons line the grounds. Giant deoders have flourished since their planting in 1938.
